The Eagles won the Super Bowl rematch!

A super match was held in the NFL on Monday night, as the Philadelphia Eagles visited the Kansas City Chiefs, so the Super Bowl pairing was repeated. In February, the Chiefs were able to turn around a 10+ point halftime deficit, but now the opposite happened, the Eagles rallied from a 10+ point deficit. Although this win does not make up for that particular winter night, Philly still won a very important victory. What happened? In the rainy weather, the sides opened with two quick punts, but then the Chiefs were able to go all the way down the field with a lot of runs, and then they took the lead with a brilliant jumping touchdown by Mahomes. However, the Eagles immediately responded to this, also operating with many runs, finally equalizing with D'Andre Swift's run. After a Chiefs punt, things heated up again. First, Jalen Hurts threw an interception, where AJ Brown really beat L'Jarius Sneed and went deep instead of the original inside cutting route, but Hurts was quickly pressured, so he threw the originally agreed route, which Sneed picked up. After that, anyway, AJ Brown forced a fumble, but as it turned out, their feet just touched on the ground, so the Chiefs could keep the ball. However, Mahomes gave it back to the Eagles not long after, he didn't lead his receiver enough, so Kevin Byard, who was acquired in a trade a few weeks ago, was able to get back in his own end zone and catch his first interception for the Eagles (this was his first touch of the ball this year anyway, he didn't have an interception either) , nor did he hit a ball in the season). The Eagles couldn't take advantage of the opportunity, Chris Jones sacked Hurts twice in quick succession, so they had to punt. The Chiefs took advantage of this and took the lead again through Travis Kelce. After that, the streak of the Philadelphia offensive line continued, now a well-timed blitz by Trent McDuffie managed to knock the ball out of Hurts' hands, who collected it, but another punt could have come. And before the end of the half, the Chiefs made one more field goal, so the home team could go to the break with a 17-7 advantage.

The second half started with four punts, and then the Eagles managed to start the engines. After a big Swift jet sweep play, Jalen Hurts ran into the end zone, so the visitors caught up. The Chiefs would have answered immediately, but they made a mistake in the red zone, Bradley Roby knocked the ball out of Kelce's hands! The Eagles haven't capitalized on this yet, but they have on the next Chiefs mistake. Now this did not come from a player, but from a coach. Andy Reid missed fourth-and-four on the opponent's 39-yarder, the punt rolled into the end zone, so KC only gained 19 yards of field position, which the Eagles brought back in two plays. A few plays later, the actual penalty came, Devonta Smith caught a long pass, and then the "brother nyiminyomi" worked as usual, so Philly took the lead with 6 minutes to go. The Chiefs then had just one three-and-out, their fourth of the game, while they had 10 all year. The Eagles also quickly kicked the ball back, so Mahomes had 3 minutes left to turn it over. They had their chance, Mahomes threw a perfect long pass, but Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped the ball. The Chiefs would have won with that, but then Josh Sweat ended the game with a rush, which ended up being an intentional grounding instead of a sack, and Mahomes couldn't solve the fourth and 25 either. So the Eagles won 21-17 on the road. Why and how did it happen? We saw two quite contrasting halves in terms of the image of the game. In the first, the Eagles' run defense failed, as they have not allowed more than 107 yards in any game this year, compared to the Chiefs' 121 rushing yards in 30 minutes. The pass defense, on the other hand, was good in the mud from the beginning, at least they did everything they could. Although 7 of Mahomes' first 8 passes were successful, most of them went into close custody, so the Chiefs solved things with strength in the air. The Chiefs were able to prevail on the other side of the ball as well, and it was more noticeable here. Hurts was sacked five times in the first half. On the one hand, this was due to the fact that Chris Jones was able to prevail in the battle of the walls (in the last two years, I don't need one hand to count how many times the Eagles lost the battle of the walls on both sides), and on the other hand, Steve Spagnuolo confused both the controller and the offensive wall extremely well. He called very creative pressures, blitzed a lot, so there were mental mistakes in the OL, and Hurts was completely confused, he could not extend the play and create, he was completely confused by Spagnuolo.

Dallas Goeder, who also plays a big role in run blocking and is a good safety target for Hurts in such situations, was visibly missing. Now he could not use the middle of the field at all and the only option was to run away and throw to the wind, but that was not successful at all. Can't praise Spagnuolo and the Chiefs defense enough for this half. However, a lot changed in the second half. The plain dropback passing game still didn't work for the Eagles, so they tried to avoid it as much as possible with runs, screens, and easier plays, and it worked better. Although AJ Brown was well taken out of the game by the Chiefs, as was to be expected (although perhaps not so much was expected, the star receiver gained only 8 yards), but that is why the team has an excellent number two receiver. Devonta Smith had a big play, going for 99 yards, his long catch was beautiful - nice pass, even nicer ball tracking and catch. With all that said, the Eagles offense wasn't very good in the second half either, but they were able to do a little more, which was just enough, as the Chiefs offense begged them to win the game. Here are their second half drives:  four-and-out  three-and-out  fumble in the red zone  punt from the opponent's 39-yard line  three-and-out  turnover on downs, game over. That's why it's hard to win a game, even with a 10-point lead. Anyway, the Chiefs scored the third fewest points in second halves so far, and this 0-point performance didn't improve that either. They haven't been able to score points in the second half for three games in a row, which can be quite a cause for concern. The contrast is especially great compared to the Super Bowl, where they were able to score points from every second half offense (three TDs and the game-winning FG). If we want to look at advanced statistics, then of the 104 games in which Mahomes played for the Chiefs, it was the 6th worst performance according to EPA/drive indicator. At the same time, let's praise the Eagles' defense, as Sean Desai is doing a pretty good job with the unit for the big games, as the defense managed to limit both the Dolphins and the Chiefs very well. It's also an interesting contrast to last year, where Jonathan Gannon's unit dominated every weak and mediocre offensive line, but failed miserably in big games. On the one hand, Kelce was guarded by Kevin Byard in man-up, and he was doubled almost the entire time in zoning, so the excellent tight end only got 44 yards. Catchers are nothing to be afraid of, as the Chiefs have proven on several occasions. Justin Watson had a good game with 53 yards and a TD, but it's not sweet - and then there's the MVS drop at the end that could have given KC the win. Isiah Pacheco can be singled out for his 89 rushing yards, but the entire Chiefs gained just 47 yards on the ground in the second half, so that's just the first half. With this loss, the Chiefs currently slipped back to second place (the Ravens lead the AFC), while the Eagles continue to consolidate their first place in the NFC, although the Lions are very clingy, and Philly now has the Bills, both the 49ers and Cowboys in the next three rounds.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson remains the Browns' starting quarterback

The Browns signed Joe Flacco, but according to head coach Kevin Stefanski, the veteran running back will only play a supporting role, with rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson still the team's starter. He did not talk about whether Flacco will get the replacement position or whether he will remain only the number three option for the time being. Fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson wasn't terrible against the Steelers, at least not as much as he was against the Ravens in the fourth round, when he had five turnovers and three turnovers. Now he managed the meeting quite well, he only had one really bad pass, and he was able to add to the offensive line on his feet, although the fact is that his added value was still very little (he finished the game with 55.8 percent accuracy and 165 yards, with an average of just 3.8 yards per pass attempt). In the passing game, Flacco could probably offer more even now, but the Browns would be less unpredictable on the ground, so Stefanski's decision is understandable for now. However, more is needed from the rookie if Cleveland wants to fight for more serious goals.

  • ‘Came through’: Browns reflect on DTR’s winning performance

    Sun, November 19, 2023 at ··

CLEVELAND (AP) — As Dorian Thompson-Robinson sat in the back of a golf cart swiping through text messages overwhelming his phone, wide receiver Elijah Moore slid in to an empty seat behind Cleveland’s rookie quarterback.

“I’m going to sit next to the man,” Moore said.

Thompson-Robinson laughed. A most unexpected star.

Delivering on a promise to improve in his second NFL start, Thompson-Robinson completed four straight passes on a clutch drive to set up Dustin Hopkins’ 34-yard field goal with 2 seconds left that gave Cleveland a 13-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Thompson-Robinson’s late performance rallied the Browns (7-3) just days after the team was rocked by losing franchise QB Deshaun Watson for the season with a shoulder injury.

With the crowd chanting “D-T-R!” and Watson watching from Cleveland’s sideline in sweats, Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round pick from UCLA, calmly completed four passes for 39 yards before Hopkins put away the Steelers (6-4).

When Hopkins’ kick sailed through the uprights, Thompson-Robinson squatted and was overwhelmed by emotion, needing to wipe away tears of joy.

“Yeah, man, I’m super happy,” said Thompson-Robinson, who screamed himself hoarse by barking out plays in the huddle. “I’m glad that I can get this one for my teammates.”

It was a stunning turnaround for Thompson-Robinson, who until those final moments had done little to think he was capable of a comeback.

His stats weren’t great — 24 of 43 for 165 yards with a pick — and he had a few passes dropped, but most importantly, Thompson-Robinson only had one turnover after throwing three picks in his debut on Oct. 1.

“He came through,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “He made some big plays throughout that drive, made big plays throughout the game. I know it wasn’t perfect at all times, but he came through when it mattered.”

The Browns have now beaten the Ravens and Steelers (6-4) in consecutive weeks for the first time in 15 tries. And Thompson-Robinson’s performance, though at times ragged, has given Cleveland hope this season can still be special without Watson, who will undergo surgery this week.

For the first time this season, the Steelers lost a close one.

Pittsburgh was outgained for the 10th straight week and QB Kenny Pickett (106 yards) couldn’t do much against Cleveland’s top-ranked defense, which forced nine punts.

The Steelers fell to 49-15 against rookie QBs since 1970.

“We’ll learn from this,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “We’ll be back.”

Steelers running back Jaylen Warren was one of the few bright spots with a 74-yard TD run and career-high 129 yards.

Pittsburgh turned to its always reliable defense in the second half and did a nice job shutting down Thompson-Robinson until the final moments.

Cleveland took over at its own 35 with 1:18 left and the rookie QB completed passes of 15, 5, 8 and 11 yards to move the Browns to Pittsburgh’s 34. The Steelers were called for a neutral zone infraction, moving the ball closer for Hopkins’ winner.

But Thompson-Robinson had done the heavy lifting.

“He’s a warrior,” said Browns tight end David Njoku, who had several drops. “It’s not easy being in his shoes, especially being a rookie. He got the job done.”

The second half turned into a battle of the defenses and field possession.

The Steelers inexplicably took Warren off the field for one series before he had two nice runs to set up Chris Boswell’s 28-yard field goal that tied it at 1 with 7:40 left.

After gaining just 64 yards in the first half, the Steelers picked up 74 on their second snap of the third quarter.

Warren took a quick pitch, made a cut on the right side, stepped through cornerback Greg Newsome II’s tackle attempt and outran all of Cleveland’s defenders for Pittsburgh’s longest play this season.

It was also the Steelers’ longest run since 2014.

Garrett set the tone for Cleveland’s defense, sacking Pickett on Pittsburgh’s first play and dropping him in the end zone for an apparent safety. However, the officials ruled the Steelers QB’s forward progress was at the 1, and Stefanski was too late in challenging the call.

Stefanski was quicker with his flag a few minutes later, getting Jerome Ford’s short run from the 1 changed from a goal-line stop to a touchdown.

    CHUBB BACK

Browns star running back Nick Chubb, who suffered a season-ending in Week 2 at Pittsburgh, was introduced before the game.

Chubb took a few steps out of the tunnel on crutches and acknowledged the roaring crowd. The four-time Pro Bowler had surgery on his ACL this week. The Browns expect him back at some point in the 2024 season.

    INJURIES

Browns: LB Anthony Walker Jr. (hamstring) left early in the second quarter after getting hurt in punt coverage. Walker threw his helmet in frustration before walking to the locker room. … S Rodney McLeod (biceps) got hurt in the second half and didn’t return.

  • Joe Flacco returns to AFC North, Browns confirm!

Joe Flacco is back in the AFC North! According to ESPN's information, after Friday's trial game, the Browns will officially sign the now 38-year-old quarterback today - for the time being on the practice squad, but by definition they will be able to bring him up from there at any time, and according to expectations, this will happen.

Due to Deshaun Watson's injury, PJ Walker and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson also started for the Browns this year. The latter played against the Steelers on Sunday, completing 23 of 43 passes for 165 yards and an INT, but led the offense to a game-winning field goal at the end. He wasn't particularly bad, but he had an interception and a dropped interception, and almost all of his passes were within 5 yards, so very little was asked of him.

The team has an elite defense, and the running back will only be asked not to mess things up, they will try to move with the running game and easy quick passes - however, as we saw against the Steelers, if they can't open the field, then the defense can also play these short games. The question is, what else is in Flacco at the moment, but maybe opponents can fear his arm more, and maybe he can solve the short games as well - on the other hand, he won't be as dangerous with swings as DTR or Walker were.

It has not yet been revealed whether the former first-rounder and then Super Bowl MVP is intended to be a starter or just a backup.

By the way, the Browns will play next week against the Broncos, who have won four games in a row.

  • Browns beat Steelers 13-10 in nail biter of a game

    Sun, November 19, 2023 at 7:00 AM EST·

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Browns and Steelers rivalry kicked off in Cleveland with both teams battling to gain sole possession of 2nd place in the AFC North behind the front-running Baltimore Ravens. And, with seconds to go in the game, the Browns beat the Steelers, 13-10.

    Here’s how it all started:

Cool, dry, and sunny conditions greeted fans and players along the Lake Erie Shores.

Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, nicknamed DTR for short, and the Browns got the ball first but the drive quickly fizzled out.

Myles Garrett put a hard hit on Pittsburgh QB Kenny Picket putting the Steelers at their own 1 yard-line.

Browns take a 7-0 on a one-yard TD run by Jerome Ford.

Browns lead the Steelers after the 1st quarter 7-0.

    Cleveland is playing hard-hitting defense.

Midway through the 2nd quarter both defenses are playing stingy football.

Browns take a halftime lead of 10-0 after Dustin Hopkins connects on a 25 yard-line field goal.

Cleveland’s defense held Pittsburgh’s offense to only 65 yards in the first half.

Rip-roaring into the third quarter, the Steelers did what they do from time to time, score. It was a 74-yard touchdown run, the longest for them in nine years. This moved the score to 10-7.

Both teams are locked in a defensive battle.

Browns lead 10-7 as the 4th quarter starts. Myles Garret continues to be a force of nature in the NFL and gets his second sack of the day.

It’s a nailbiter now as the Steelers tie the game at 10-10 on a 28-yard field goal halfway through the 4th quarter.

Yards seemed to be hard to come by in the fourth quarter.
With five seconds to go in the game, it all came down to a kick from Hopkins. And it was good, with two seconds left. Putting Browns back in front 13-10. And that’s how it all ended.

  • Cleveland Browns @ Baltimore Ravens 33 – 31

    *OMG BROWNS*

The Ravens didn't trail for a single second in the game, yet lost, and the Browns pulled off another crazy game three weeks after beating the Colts. Two of the best defenses in the league met, but this time it was not in nullifying the opponent's offensive lines, but in big plays. Right in the second play of the match, Mike Macdonald's defense left its mark: Kyle Hamilton hit Watson's pass, caught the bouncing ball and carried it back for a touchdown. After the pick-six, the defense sent the Watsons down with a 3&out, so the home offensive line could come in, and they immediately made two big plays. First, Bateman caught a long pass, then freshman Keaton Mitchell ran for a 39-yard touchdown. The Ravens led 14-0 in less than five minutes.

Then, until the end of the second quarter, neither offensive line could really make progress after both running backs played under very intense pressure: Jackson was generally better at escaping and improvising, and Watson was quite inaccurate passing (6/20 passing success in the first half), but both offensive units got there. to field goal attempts. Dustin Hopkins made three out of three, but Tucker's second field goal was blocked by the Browns and they also gave the offensive line a short field - this resulted in the third Browns field goal. Within the two-minute warning, Jackson threw an interception, giving the visitors a chance to close: in the end, Hopkins didn't try another field goal from 60 yards, and the Hail Mary (which P.J. Walker tried because Watson seemed to pick up a minor injury on the previous play ) didn't succeed either, so the half ended with a 17-9 Ravens lead.

In the third quarter, both teams led a touchdown drive, through which the difference between the two offensive lines and the picture of the match were clearly visible. The Ravens were able to move very quickly with big plays mainly from Jackson's passes (of course, when the Browns' defense allowed them), and the Browns, usually based on the running game, put together offensive sequences that burned up a lot of the clock. The Ravens made a successful third attempt for the first time at the beginning of the half, and it immediately turned into a touchdown after the defenders missed Odell Beckham Jr. running the slant route. After the Browns' long attack, Kareem Hunt forced himself into the end zone, and then the two-point attempt was also successful, so the Browns closed with a score of 24-17.

Myles Garrett sacked Jackson on two consecutive plays, the Browns could have followed the punt early in the fourth quarter, but ex-Raven running back James Proche dropped the ball, which was picked up by Baltimore at the opponent's 12-yard line. There was a big scramble here, first a flag was thrown to the defense, then to the offensive line, then to the defense again, but Gus Edwards finally took it in for a touchdown, so the dropped punt paid off.

The Browns put together an exceptional Ravens offense, Njoku brought massive yards, then Rock Ya-Sin was called for pass interference, and Watson solved it from close, handing out a TD pass to Elijah Moore. By the way, Watson improved a lot in the second half, all 14 of his pass attempts were successful and he collected 134 yards. After the Browns closed for one more possession, the real turning point came: the first scene of the game was repeated, only this time on the other side. Jackson's pass was batted in and Greg Newsome II scooped it up and carried it into the end zone.

The match was further spiced up by the fact that Dustin Hopkins, who had been flawless until then, missed the extra, so the Ravens' lead remained at 31-30. The pass rush of the Browns also stopped the Ravens' next action, so Cleveland got the ball and the proven recipe could come, this time at the best time. They were able to make good progress with the running game, got into field goal range, wound down the clock to 3 seconds, and Hopkins hit it from 41 yards.

The visiting Browns won a huge victory from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, and several players cannot be praised enough: Deshaun Watson played his best game in a Browns jersey in the second half, the offensive line blocked the run in an elite manner, which resulted in 178 yards on the ground, the defense was so there is a playmaking factor like maybe only the Ravens, and Myles Garrett and Za'Darius Smith were amazing all game. Because of the latter, Lamar Jackson could not dominate on the other side except for two lightning-fast drives, and the running game was largely taken away by the Browns defense. However, the big plays came from the Ravens' defense, the pass rush led by Jadeveon Clowney was lively throughout, although they couldn't do anything against the run today (Jerome Ford ran 107 yards with an average of 6.3 yards). The Ravens are 7-3, the Browns are 6-3, and the AFC North is getting more and more exciting, with all four teams fighting for a realistic chance of making the playoffs.
